Russian alphabet (Cyrillic)

Russian alphabet is a variant of Cyrillic alphabet. It is also known as Azbuka. Cyrillic alphabet is used in languages of Russia, Belorussia, Ukraine, Serbia, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia and few others. Alphabet for each language differs slightly from basic Cyrillic. In table below is current Russian version. Some letters have been eliminated in 18th century and later on in 1918 and these are not listed on this page. The alphabet itself was developed in 9th century. After Bulgaria entered the European Union, Cyrillic became third official alphabet of the EU (next to Latin and Greek alphabets). Russian alphabet is usually quite easy to learn for English speakers, because many letters are similar or same as in Latin alphabet. However you should be aware of the fact, that some letters have same symbols as in Latin alphabet, but pronunciation is different.
